The most effective way to keep acne scars from becoming to prevalent is to treat them early on, according to Brown University Health Services. While there are a number of acne scar treatments available, everybody reacts differently certain techniques, so be sure to consult your doctor before undergoing any type of treatment.

Mederma

The topical gel Mederma has traditionally been used in the medical field to help reduce the appearance of surgical scars. More recently, the gel has been used in the treatment of mild acne scars and has shown to be an effective solution, according to Brown University Health Services.

Accutane

Accutane, a clinical drug that contains isotretinoin, is used in the treatment of severe cases of acne, called recalcitrant nodular acne, according to the National Institutes of Health. Accutane has been tested and shown positive results in treating acne scars, based on information from Brown University Health Services.

Laser Treatments

Certain types of scar laster treatments may help reduce acne scar appearances, according to the Mayo Clinic. Mild laser procedures, such as non-ablative laser treatments, radio frequency techniques and pulsed-light methods gently heat the skin without injuring the epidermis, the outer-most skin layer. The heating causes the dermis to form new skin cells, and after a number of treatments, can help reduce scar appearance. More intense laser treatments, called laser resurfacing, the laser completely destroys the epidermis and warms the dermis, the layer underneath. New skin cells are formed as these wounds heals.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion treatments subject the epidermis to vigorous cleaning via a rotating wire-brush. The brush removes most of the skin layer, including any scar tissue on the surface. Deeper scars may also become less visible, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Surgery

Punch excision is a minor surgery that removes acne scars by cutting them out of the skin's surface. This type of procedure is usually only intended for deeply indented scars, according to the Mayo Clinic. The skin is repaired with either skin grafts or stitches at the point of where the scar was cut out.

Injections

Collagen and fat injections are a temporary solution to acne scars. According to the Mayo Clinic, the injections stretch the skin and can help make the wrinkled acne scar become smooth. Over time, the injections wear off and the skin returns to its original scarred state, so tissue filler procedures such as this will have to be performed routinely.
