The Avalanche refers to a specific series of mountain bikes produced by the GT bicycle company. The different models of the GT Avalanche series allow you to ride on beginner to expert mountain biking terrain. Another manufacturer of mountain bikes, Mongoose, specializes in bikes for a variety of disciplines, including racing and backwoods trail riding.

History

Gary Turner founded the GT bicycle company in 1973, using his experience welding car parts to create some of the first BMX racing bicycles in the United States. According to GT, Turner began to produce his first GT mountain bikes in 1987. Mongoose opened for business in 1974, predominantly focused on BMX racing. Mongoose didn't turn its attention to mountain biking until the early 1990s.

Function

The Avalanche is part of the Endurance series of GT mountain bikes. The Avalanche is a durable bike you can ride for exercise and leisure. For more advanced riders, there are specialized models of the GT Avalanche designed to withstand rough mountain biking trails. Mongoose mountain bikes enable you to bike on designated free-riding obstacle courses and to jump off dirt ramps.

The 1.0 model remains the most basic style of GT Avalanche bike. According to GT, the 1.0 Avalanche model is built for the recreational mountain biker who rides easy to moderate terrain. GT's Avalanche Expert model features specialized construction for narrow trails and tracks. According to Mongoose, its All-Mountain series bikes can adapt to all riding terrains.

Features

The Expert Avalanche model features patented RockShox front suspension that allows you to do long-distance jumps and high-altitude tricks. All GT Avalanche models feature handbrakes to help you slow your momentum as you reach top speeds. Freeride models from Mongoose feature an angled seat that helps you stay balanced on your bike while riding on a steep, downward, sloping terrain.
