Colon Cleansing Process

Cleansing Goals

Flushing out buildup of toxins and wastes from the body is possible with a colon cleanse. A colon cleanse may take between one and three days, and can be performed using a variety of methods, from drinking juices to taking commercially prepared probiotic supplements, fibers and other ingredients that help improve digestion and nutrient absorption. A colon cleanse literally cleans and scrubs out the colon, or the large intestine, where toxins and wastes often sit for days, weeks or months, building up in the colon and adding to lethargy, weight gain and bloating. The most common cleanses are the juice, commerical or fiber cleanse processes.

Juice Cleanse

A person can start a colon cleanse by drinking approximately 16 oz. of unsweetened prune juice. This will prompt most everyone to head to the bathroom, which effectively helps empty the bowel for the first part of the cleansing process. It is recommended to wait about a half an hour before drinking an 8 oz. glass of other juice, such as apple, tomato or grape. In another 30 minutes, it will be time to drink another 8 oz. glass of water. Throughout the day, it is recommended to switch off drinking water and the second juice every 30 minutes.

Commercial Cleanse

It is advisable to always follow instructions on any colon cleanse product purchases on the Internet or at your local drug or natural health food store. Some products can be more complicated than others, and some can take a day or two while others can take weeks. Many commercial colon cleanse packages or treatments require individuals to take pills one to three times a day, as well as offer guidance and instructions on how much water or juice to drink, and a diet to follow.

Fiber Cleanse

Taking a fiber cleanse for the colon often requires that individuals drink or eat a certain amount of fiber, which helps add bulk to toxins and wastes in the intestines for easier elimination. For example, some fiber cleanses will specify the individuals to drink a daily fiber shake, following their own recipes or ingredients, to up to three to five times a day. These fiber shakes are often consumed for up to four weeks, but individuals must determine their own goals and reactions to the cleanse to ascertain results.
