A raw diet is characterized by eating nothing but raw foods or eating a high amount of raw foods on a daily basis. Advocates of this diet plan claim that raw foods are more recognizable by the body due to the fact that they are not chemically changed from intense heat and the nutritional content stays intact. The foods involved with this diet come in many forms.

Fruits

Fruits are high in fiber, vitamins, natural occurring sugars, water content and they are also good sources of carbohydrates. They are all raw and examples include apples, oranges, pears, grapefruits, lemons, limes, bananas, peaches, plums, apricots, avocados, dates and figs. These fruits can also be heated to 116 F degrees or less through a process called "dehydration." They are still considered raw after this takes place and you can also get more shelf life out of them. They are also easier to transport when you are out on the road.

Vegetables

Vegetables are similar to fruits in various ways. They are high in water content, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and they are also raw. Examples of these are kale, cucumbers, celery, spinach, sprouts, collards, carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, all forms of lettuce, peppers, mushrooms and garlic. Like fruits, vegetables can be sliced up and dehydrated for longer shelf life.

Seeds

Seeds are high in fiber, protein and unsaturated fats. Seeds that do not get roasted are raw and they include sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds and poppy seeds. These are often soaked in water overnight which causes them to sprout. This helps make them more digestible and "alive" with nutrients.

Nuts

Nuts have the same make-up as seeds except they are larger. Examples of nuts include almonds, walnuts, pine nuts, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts and cashews. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, the monounsaturated fat that nuts contain is good for the heart and it can lower your risk for heart disease and heart attacks.

Miscellaneous

Raw honey is a type of sweetener that is raw. Coconuts are raw and so is the water that comes from them. Sea vegetables like dulse, hijiki, lavar, kombu and nori are dehydrated and raw.
