Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients along with protein and fats. They come in at 4 calories per gram and they are used by the body for energy. People who are on high protein diets resort to eating low carbs or no carbs to create ketosis in the body. This takes place when the body is burning fat for energy instead of carbohydrates.
Meats
Meats are high in protein, iron, some are high in fat and all of them are low in carbs. Beef, turkey, chicken, venison, bison, lamb, duck, pork and wild game are all low-carb examples. Any type of processed meat that is a derivative of these are also low-carb such as sausage, bacon, ham, lunch meats, hot dogs and porketta. Eggs are another type of high-protein food that is low in carbs.
Seafood
All forms of seafood, shellfish and regular fish are high in protein and low in carbs. Examples of these include trout, catfish, salmon, eel, tuna, herring, mackerel, halibut, clams, oysters, scallops, lobster and shrimp. If any of these fish were to become breaded, they would no longer be low in carbs.
Seeds and Nuts
Seeds and nuts are high in poly and monounsaturated fats, protein and fiber. They are also low in carbohydrates. Examples of these include almonds, walnuts, peanuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, chestnuts, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flax seeds and pine nuts.
Dairy Products
Dairy products are high in calcium, protein and fat. They are all low in carbs, but some are lower than others. All forms of milk have about 11 grams per cup, yogurt has about 17 grams and heavy cream, sour cream and butter have 1.2 grams or less.
Alcohol
Alcohol has 7 calories per gram. It is low in protein and some varieties are also low in carbs. Gin, whiskey, vodka, rum, light beer, white wine, rum, Guinness beer, sherry and port are examples of low-carb alcoholic beverages. Gin, whiskey, rum and vodka are completely carb-free.
Veggies
Vegetables are high in fiber, water, vitamins, minerals, and they have very little fat is any at all. Examples of vegetables that are low in carbs include all types of lettuce, baby spinach, sprouts, asparagus, mushrooms, radishes, zucchini, tomatoes and green peppers.
