The skin care routine that has served you well for a long time may not be the best routine to continue as the years go by. As the skin matures, it produces less oil, causing the skin to be thinner and more sensitive. Eventually, wrinkles and crow's feet develop and the skin begins to sag. A regular skin care routine for mature skin won't turn back the clock, but it may prevent further damage and promote a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Step 1

Clean your face every day using a gentle facial cleanser. Avoid cleansers containing soap, which will dry and irritate the skin. Limit cleansing to once per day if your skin is dry.

Step 2

Apply a gentle toner after cleansing your skin. Use a toner free of alcohol and harsh chemicals. Avoid using toner altogether or apply toner occasionally if your skin is extremely dry or sensitive.

Step 3

Apply a skin-care product containing Retin-A, which will help reduce age spots, crow's feet, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Use Retin-A strictly according to the package directions as Retin-A may irritate sensitive skin and may make the skin more prone to sun damage. Products containing a low percentage of alpha-hydroxy acid may also be effective. Talk to your dermatologist if you're unsure which product is best for you.

Step 4

Moisturize your skin every morning using a moisturizer containing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen every two hours if you're spending time in the sun. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella to protect your skin. Use a thicker, more emollient moisturizer before you go to bed at night.

Step 5

Exfoliate your skin twice every week to remove dead, dry skin cells to reveal healthy skin underneath. Use a commercial exfoliant formulated for dry or mature skin.
