BMX, short for bicycle motocross, refers to a style of bike-riding that involves performing stunts, jumps or maneuvering around obstacles. BMX bikes are designed to be ridden on dirt, pavement or wooden ramps, and they are typically identified by their standard 20-inch tires and lightweight, durable frame. A number of companies specialize in manufacturing BMX bikes and several brands stand out as leaders in the market.

Diamondback

The Diamondback company manufactures BMX bikes for racing, jumping and street/park use. Popular jump models include the Session, which features a Hi-Ten steel frame, and the Signature, which features a full chromoly frame. Racing models include the Nitrus and the Viper, which comes in Mini and Junior versions. The Diamondback line of street/park bikes includes the Venom, Joker and Grind models. Diamondback bikes are sold only through authorized dealers with prices typically ranging from $200 to $800 or more.

We the People

We the People also offers a complete line of BMX bikes for street, jumping and racing. Its 2011 line includes a number of models, including the Crysis, Avenger, Volta, Trust, Reason, Versus, Zodiac and Envy. We the People models are offered across six user levels, including novice, expert, master, pro and elite series. Considered one of the more expensive BMX bike brands, We the People models typically retail from $300 to $1,000.

DK

DK Bicycles offers a complete line of street, racing and park/trail bikes. Its line of racing models feature aluminum frames while their park/trail and racing bikes feature chromoly frames. Popular models include the Aura, Helio, Cygnus, Effect, Opsis, Spektre, Valiant and Sentry. Their line of racing bikes also includes Mini, Junior, Pro and Expert models. DK Bicycles are less expensive compared with other brands, with models ranging from $200 to $500.

Haro

Haro produces an extensive line of BMX models designed for street, park or trail riding as well as racing. The Haro Z series is designed specifically for younger riders, and includes boys' and girls' BMX models for children as young as 2 years old. Haro also manufactures the unique 000 Brakeless Series, which features a cleaner and more lightweight construction and is suitable for riding on dirt or pavement. Excluding the Z series, Haro bikes come in small, medium and large frames, and typically retail from $250 to $650.

Fit

Fit offers several trail, street and park models as well as a number of signature models, including the Mike Aitken, Brian Foster and Van Homan series. Fit BMX models feature full chromoly frames and typically retail for anywhere from $300 to $700.
