Detoxification happens naturally every time you breathe. Your body moves toxins out of the body through the skin, colon, liver, kidneys and heart. A fruit diet can also help your body cleanse the colon and other internal organs. After a short fruit-only diet, return to eating varied foods such as vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, low-fat dairy foods, non-saturated fats and lean proteins. Consult with your doctor if you have any serious health issues before detoxing on a fruit diet.
Juicing
Elson Haas, MD, author of "The New Detox Diet," recommends detoxing with a variety of organic fruit. Dr. Haas says juice detoxing clears the gastrointestinal tract to improve digestion, absorption of nutrients and elimination. Dr. Haas has led juicing groups for several years and adapts the program according the individual's needs. According to Carrie L'Esperance, author of "The New Seasonal Detox Diet," apples are excellent for cleansing because they contain pectin, which helps soften stool to clear the colon. According to Vasant Lad, author of "The Complete Guide to Ayurvedic Home Remedies," drinking herbal detox teas such as triphala, made from three dried fruits to help you stay regular. As you will not get any fiber from juicing, it is important to keep the colon clear.
Papaya
Eat papaya for the papain enzymes they contain to help boost digestion, according to the National Institutes of Health. Enzyme supplements often contain papain from papaya for this reason. Remember to sip at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water, in addition to the juices, as recommended by the American Cancer Society.
Pineapple
Eat pineapple because it contains the enzyme bromelain. Use fresh pineapple as canned fruit is often sweetened with corn syrup and does not have much of the active enzymes available. According to the National Institutes of Health, bromelain is considered a type of cysteine proteinase, an enzyme that helps break down protein. Eating pineapple during a fruit detox is helpful as it can help improve digestion, says Whfoods.com.
