Changing your diet can be complicated, but it's often essential for maintaining optimum health. However, adopting a diet high in alkaline minerals isn't difficult if you know which foods are alkaline and which are acidic so you can adapt your menu accordingly.
Blood pH Balance
The reason many people adopt an alkaline diet is because of the health benefits. A healthy blood pH level usually lands between 7.35 and 7.45. A pH that falls above 7.0 is alkaline, and below is acidic. Eating alkaline foods helps ensure that your blood stays in this healthy pH range. Indulging in acidic foods, however, can cause damage to your body's immune system, leading to disease and even cancer.
Alkaline Vegetables
Many vegetables are alkaline, including eggplant, chard, broccoli, carrots, green beans, beets, peppers, onion, lettuce, spirulina, garlic, watercress, mushrooms, kale, radish, sweet potatoes and wheat grass.
Alkaline Fruits
Several kinds of fruits are alkaline, even those that you'd normally consider acidic like oranges and grapefruit, because they turn alkaline within the body. Other alkaline fruits include cantaloupe, pear, peach, apple, currants, banana, berries, rhubarb, avocado, pineapple, cherries, tomato and watermelon.
Proteins and Nuts
A few kinds of nuts and other proteins are considered alkaline, including almonds, chestnuts, whey and tofu. Most protein meats are acidic, however.
Spices
Most kinds of spices are alkaline, even those that are considered spicy or very flavorful. For instance, cinnamon, ginger and curry are all alkaline. Sea salt is alkaline as well, along with all herbs.
