Whether meeting someone for the first time or conversing with an old friend, your eyes and lips are generally the most noticed attributes. Healthy and moisturized lips provide a perfect frame for a friendly smile. On the other hand, dry and cracked lips look like a broken frame for an otherwise perfect palette. Fortunately, lip creams can be used to keep your pout pretty and healthy. When applied once in the morning and once at night, lip cream not only hydrates the lips, but also prevents fine lines and wrinkles.

Step 1

Examine the list of ingredients included in your lip cream. If you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients, avoid using the product. If you are not familiar with the ingredients, conduct a simple patch test to check for allergies before using the product. Simply apply a small amount of lip cream to the inside of your wrist. Rub the cream into the skin gently and let sit for 24 hours. If no reaction occurs during the 24-hour period, the lip cram is likely safe for you to use. An allergic reaction might involve burning, swelling, redness, rash or itching of the skin.

Step 2

Complete all other facial care routines necessary before applying lip cream. These routines might include cleansing the face, removing make-up and applying moisturizer. If you will be brushing your teeth, complete it now. Brushing your teeth after applying lip cream will likely cause the cream to be rinsed away. Once your facial care is completed, gently pat the face dry with a soft towel.

Step 3

Exfoliate the lips gently to remove dry flaky skin. Create your own lip exfoliator at home by mixing a small amount of olive oil with brown sugar. Rub this mixture on your lips and let sit for one to two minutes. Then, use your fingers or a soft toothbrush to gently massage the solution into the lips. After 30 to 60 seconds, rinse with water and pat dry with a soft towel.

Step 4

Review the directions on your package of lip cream. Although most creams are quite simple to apply, it is important to review the instructions before using the product. For example, the Pevonia Botanica Youthful Lip Cream recommends applying the Youthful Lip Retinol Serum before the lip cream.

Step 5

Dab a small amount of lip cream onto the middle of your top and bottom lips. Use your finger to gently massage the cream into your lip skin. Work from the inside of the lips to the outside corners. The entire lip surface should be covered. Once the cream has been fully massaged into the skin, it should not be visible.

Step 6

Avoid rubbing the cream off of your lips for at least the next hour. While eating, avoid closing your lips around utensils or blotting the lips with a napkin. While drinking, use a straw to avoid leaving your lip cream on the side of a glass. Avoid licking the lips and smoking.
