Lens scratches are a hazard that every eyeglass wearer experiences. Even the lightest scratches can interfere with your line of sight and mar the appearance of your glasses. Deep scratches and cracks require that the lenses be replaced by your optometrist. Superficial scratches, however, can be treated at home and rendered mostly invisible.

Step 1

Exfoliate the surface of your lenses to remove superficial scratches. Add non-gel toothpaste or a teaspoon of baking soda to a soft, wet cloth and gently buff the surface of your lenses. Rinse clean and dry.

Step 2

Use a white grease pencil or a china filler to draw over the scratches and fill them in. Buff with a soft cloth to remove the excess material. You may need to reapply every week or so, as necessary.

Step 3

Try a product made for polishing wood furniture, such as carnauba wax. Apply the product to a soft cloth, and rub over your lenses to fill in the scratches. Rinse clean and dry. Reapply weekly, as needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • If your sunglasses become dirty or dusty, refrain from wiping them. Blow on them instead to remove debris. If you keep your glasses in your purse or pocket, store them first in a sleeve or case.
