Pregnancy is an exciting time for a mother-to-be. Knowing which foods are healthy and which should be avoided is important to ensure optimal nutrition for both mother and baby. A pregnant woman should talk with her obstetrician about food choices. Some foods and drinks, however, should be avoided altogether.
Alcohol
Alcohol should be avoided, both when a woman is pregnant and when she is trying to conceive. Depending on the amount, the timing and the pattern of use, alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome and other developmental disorders, the American Pregnancy Association advises. No amount is considered safe during pregnancy.
Soft, Unpasteurized Cheeses
Cheeses that are unpasteurized may cause food-borne illness that affects the health and development of the fetus. Unless these soft cheeses are clearly labeled as made with pasteurized milk, pregnant women should not eat brie, feta, camembert, blue cheese or Mexican-style cheeses such as queso blanco, queso fresco or panela, according to MayoClinic.com. These cheeses may contain the organism listeria, which can cause infection and illness in a developing fetus.
Raw Eggs, Fish and Shellfish
Raw eggs and shellfish should be avoided during pregnancy. Raw shellfish can cause a bacterial infection that poses a danger to the developing fetus. Sushi or fish that contain high levels of mercury, such as swordfish and bass, should be avoided. High levels of mercury can affect the nervous system development in a growing fetus. According to the American Pregnancy Association, raw eggs or any foods that contain raw eggs should be avoided because of potential exposure to salmonella.
Deli Meats
Deli meats have been known to be contaminated with listeria, which can cause miscarriage, says the American Pregnancy Association. Women who choose to eat these meats should heat the meat thoroughly until steaming hot to kill any bacteria that may be present.
