Nursing mothers may wonder if their breast milk supply is providing their children with all the nutrients and sustenance they need. This concern arises because nursing mothers are not able to monitor the amount of breast milk taken in by the baby. The reality is that most mothers are capable of increasing their milk supply if it is not already sufficient--only very rarely are mothers forced to use formula when they don't want to.
Step 1
Alternate between both breasts during each meal, and breastfeed or pump frequently throughout the day to keep both mammary glands active.
Step 2
Eat a diet high in carbohydrates, calcium and protein. Give your body extra fuel to complete the added workload, and provide it with the essential ingredients of breast milk.
Step 3
Get plenty of rest, allowing your body to focus its energy on milk production.
Step 4
Take fenugreek, an herb known to assist in the increase of milk production. The easiest form to take it is by capsule.
Step 5
Talk to your doctor about whether medication is the right approach for you. He might prescribe Reglan, a milk production-increasing pill.
