Acne, also referred to as acne vulgaris, is a common skin condition in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. It affects nearly 40 to 50 million Americans every year. Teenagers and young adults are more prone to acne, but anyone can suffer from it. Fortunately, there is a number of vitamins used to help treat and prevent acne.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A works with carotenoids to keep the protective tissue of your skin strong. The vitamin prevents acne from forming by reducing the production of the natural human oil, sebum. Vitamin A works to help repair the tissues of your skin. Also, vitamin A helps the body deal with oxidative stress, according to Dr. George Obikoya of the Vitamins & Nutrition Center.

B-Vitamins

All B vitamins help your skin maintain a healthy tone, and can relieve stress and anxiety, which can trigger acne. Thiamine or vitamin B1 promotes healthy cell circulation and works as an antioxidant to help stop acne. It is recommended that individuals take at least 100 mg of thiamine everyday to help fight off acne. Riboflavin or vitamin B12 helps to keep your skin healthy and it is recommended for you to take around 100 mg of it three times a day. Also, a lack of vitamins B3, B5 and B6 may result in acne.

Zinc

Zinc, a trace mineral found in mostly every cell in your body, contains antioxidant properties, helping to protect your skin tissues and cells from free radicals. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, some studies have suggested that zinc supplements may be able to help treat acne when in combination with the topical antibiotic erythromycin.
