The Side Effects of Tucks Medicated Pads

Tucks Medicated Pads have become ubiquitous for new mothers and so-called corporate chair jockeys. Tucks Pads can be tucked in a pocket or purse discreetly, and they effectively relieve the burning and itching caused by hemorrhoids. Though applied topically, the soaking solution can enter the blood stream if a hemorrhoid is ruptured. Whether it enters the blood stream or is used topically, Tucks Pads have been known to cause pronounced side effects.

The main ingredient in Tucks Pads--50 percent of the soaking solution--is witch hazel. It has traditionally been used as an anti-bacterial and astringent. While the Food and Drug Administration has not officially verified the side effects of witch hazel, as an astringent it can cause rash, swelling and occasionally dizziness. Note that while pure witch hazel can be ingested, the solution used by Tuck Pads is only partially composed of witch hazel and should not be ingested under any circumstances. Otherwise, it is a relatively stable compound, especially when compared to the two other ingredients found in Tucks Pads.

Glycerin is a trihydroxyalcohol that conveys both a diuretic and laxative effect. It relaxes the tissues in the application area while simultaneously depleting them of liquids. It is the second most prominent ingredient in Tucks Pads and has been known to cause considerable side effects. While it is effective at stopping the affected area from re-absorbing moisture, it can significantly reduce blood volume. This is why the pads should never be applied to hemorrhaging hemorrhoids. If glycerin enters the blood stream, it may cause diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. If continual rectal bleeding or pronounced shortness of breath occurs, seek immediate medical help.

Propylene glycol can cause uncomfortable side effects. Users have complained of a mild, stinging sensation that will not abate. In extreme cases, this sensation could last up to an hour or more. Furthermore, some users have complained of severe allergic reactions just short of anaphylactic shock. These symptoms include a pronounced rash, hives, uncontrollable itching, and in some rare cases, difficulty breathing, chest tightness and swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. If you have any of these more severe reactions, seek immediate medical attention.
