You probably have fond memories of the holidays that your family celebrated when you were a child. As your family has aged and expanded, many of these activities may no longer be feasible. To give your children the gift of family that you enjoyed and to spend more quality time with your parents, develop new holiday rituals.
1. Understand that the holidays that you had as a child may not be practical as an adult.
2. Discuss plans for the holiday with each family member.
3. Make plans well in advance, do not wait until the last minute to plan how you will spend the holidays.
4. Add your own surprises to planned rituals. Hide a special gift for whoever finds the pickle on the Christmas tree and buy sparklers for an after-dark celebration. Just choose an activity that you can continue year in and year out.
5. Do not let conflicting schedules deter you. Celebrate holidays early or late, let go of the idea of Christmas dinner and have a Boxing Day breakfast. Negotiate the schedule so family members can attend.
6. Keep your plans the same each year, so that family members expect this activity to be a part of their holiday celebration.
