Cholesterol is one of many substances produced by the body to keep us healthy. There is both "good" and "bad" cholesterol in the blood. Controlling "bad" cholesterol is important for optimal health.
Definition
According to the Centers for Disease Control, cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in the human body.
Types
There are two types of cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is the "bad" cholesterol and HDL is the "good" cholesterol.
Significance
Cholesterol is a raw material in the body responsible for making bile. Bile is important in digestion.
Function
Cholesterol is important in the structure of brain cells, nerve cells, and every cell of the body necessary to maintain human function.
Creation
Cholesterol is made by the body and therefore not considered an essential nutrient.
Warning
Cholesterol plays a major role in creating the plaque that forms on the artery walls, resulting in narrowing of the arteries and possible heart attacks and strokes. Controlling consumption is important in lowering heart disease risk.
