According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), cellulite is fat that is deposited in pockets just under the skin's surface creating a dimpled appearance. Cellulite commonly develops in the thighs, buttocks and around the hips. Most women and a few men have some degree of cellulite. Although it is a not medical concern, it can be unattractive and many women seek out treatments to eliminate it. While some cellulite removal techniques and creams fail to achieve their promoted effectiveness, other methods may be effective.
Effects
The dimpling of the skin that occurs from cellulite is often compared to the texture of cottage cheese. Some cases of cellulite are very mild are can be detected only by pressing on the skin. When cellulite is severe the skin may have a bumpy and puckered appearance. Although it most frequently occurs below the waistline, it sometimes develops on the lower abdomen, breasts and upper arms.
Laser and Radio Frequency Systems
The Mayo Clinic says lasers and radio frequency systems can both temporarily remove the appearance of cellulite. Laser treatments use tissue massage in conjunction with diode laser energy (a semiconductor device that produces coherent radiation). The radio frequency technique uses combined negative tissue massage, radio frequency and infrared light (electromagnetic radiation) to eliminate cellulite. Both systems require a series of treatments that are performed twice a week. The results generally last no longer than six months.
Electric Muscle Stimulation
According to the experts at Women's Health Fitness, there are two major types of electric muscle stimulation devices that have been promoted as a possible means to treat the appearance of cellulite. One such device transmits electrical current to specific parts of your body. It has primarily been used for medical purposes, such as preventing blood clots, and improving blood circulation.
This equipment uses electrodes aimed at precise areas of the body. A mild electric current is transmitted to the electrodes causing your muscles to tighten and shrink. There is no sufficient evidence to conclude that this technique can successfully eliminate cellulite.
Electric Massage Stimulation
A second electric stimulating device consists of a hand-held piece with two adjustable rollers and a suction part to massage areas of concern. The manufacturers of this equipment claim the constant roller activity will produce smooth and controlled deep tissue mobilization. The theory is that this stimulation will improve circulation, eliminate excess fluid and lessen the appearance of cellulite. The effectiveness of this product type has not been determined.
Prevention
When it comes to cellulite prevention may be the best the solution. Experts at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) report that a diet rich in fiber, vegetables and fruits as well as drinking a generous supply of fluids may help ward off cellulite. In addition, regular physical activity can help to maintain strong bones and muscles. The NIH says not smoking may also prevent the development of cellulite.
