Skin rejuvenation is a process that is done to reduce signs of aging in the skin. Collagen and elastin are naturally occurring materials found in the skin to help it remain firm and elastic. As a person ages, these materials become weaker and the skin consequently develops wrinkles and lines. These effects are seen on the face and other parts of the body. Some light treatments are used for facial skin rejuvenation.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

Intense pulsed light therapy is a type of light treatment used to reduce signs of aging in the face. Broad spectrum light, which filters out light from harmful wavelengths, according to American Academy of Dermatology, is used in this treatment. During this procedure, a wand-like device is placed over the area of skin to be treated. When applied, intense pulsed light therapy, penetrates deep into the skin without injuring the surface of the skin. This procedure improves signs of facial skin aging such as skin discoloration and texture. It also reduces pore size as well as lines and wrinkles in the face.

Some side effects of this procedure are hair loss, bruising and pain during treatment, which can be reduced by using topical anesthesia.

Photodynamic Therapy

Skin Care Physicians, a website of the American Academy of Dermatology, reports that photodynamic therapy is used to diminish signs of aging such as age spots. It is a light treatment that is used on the face, and the procedure involves two steps. First, a medication called 5-aminoteulinic acid is applied to the skin. This medicine makes skin sensitive to light. It is left on the skin for a specific amount of time -- 30 minutes or more -- after which the pre-treated area is exposed to blue light. Intense pulse light is another type of light used in this treatment.

Possible side effects of photodynamic therapy are itching, skin infections and a stinging or burning sensation during the procedure -- this can be relieved with some anesthesia. In addition to facial skin rejuvenation, other uses of photodynamic therapy are skin cancer and sun-damaged skin treatment.

Light Emitting Devices

Light emitting devices or LED are used in LED photomodulation -- a light treatment that can be used for facial rejuvenation. During this procedure, light from a LED is delivered to the skin. It stimulates the skin to produce more collagen and reduces signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines. This light procedure is pain free.
