Whether it's your first time using a tampon or you've never quite gotten the hang of it, inserting a tampon doesn't have to be stressful or difficult. As long as you relax and take your time, you can use the period protection that's less bulky and noticeable than a pad. Making sure that you wash your hands and remove your tampon after four hours are the keys to making sure that your tampon is as protective and as safe as possible.
Step 1
Wash your hands with antibacterial soap and water. Spreading germs and bacteria to your genitals by touching them or inserting a tampon with unclean hands could cause a painful urinary tract infection.
Step 2
Stand in a comfortable position. It's important that you're relaxed, since tensing can close the opening of your vagina and make it difficult to insert the tampon. Some women find it helpful to place one leg on the toilet, while others prefer to bend both knees slightly, says Tampax. Experiment to find the position that is most comfortable for you.
Step 3
Unwrap the tampon from its packaging and ensure that he string is extended from the applicator. You'll notice the applicator has an inner and outer tube that are both movable. Leave them intact for now.
Step 4
Part your labial folds with your non-dominant hand to make for easy access to your vaginal opening, suggests the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
Step 5
Hold the tampon in the center of the cardboard or plastic applicator with your dominant hand. Gently place the tip of the applicator into the vagina and slowly push the applicator in until the fingers holding the applicator reach the skin, says the Center for Young Women's Health of Children's Hospital Boston.
Step 6
Push the inner tube with your thumb to insert the tampon the rest of the way. If you feel discomfort, relax and try again. Once the tampon is in place, remove the applicator with your thumb and index finger and discard it. Once in place, you should not feel the tampon. If you do, remove the tampon and try again, ensuring that you insert the tampon deep enough.
