About Prempro

Prempro is a prescription drug also called Premphase. It contains conjugated estrogens and medroxprogesterone (a combination of two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone). These hormones play important roles in the reproduction process. As a woman approaches the late forties the estrogen levels drop and menopause gradually comes on with symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats and the other rigors of the change of life. Prempro is an effective treatment to replace the estrogen levels and relieve these symptoms.

Function

Prempro is approved for use in women who have not had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) to treat menopausal symptoms, vulvar and vaginal dryness and to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. According to Emedtv.com, "medroxyprogesterone is added to Prempro because giving estrogen without a progestin to postmenopausal women can increase the risk of cancer of the lining of the uterus." Medroxyprogesterone is not necessary for women who have had a hysterectomy.

How to Take Prempro

Prempro should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Read the patient instructions leaflet for safe and effective use of this drug. Prempro may be taken with or without food, and it is best taken at the same time each day with a full glass of water. If you are having any type of surgical procedure, inform the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking Prempro as it might be necessary to discontinue taking this medication for a short period of time.

Side Effects

Side effects of Prempro may include an allergic reaction, which is a serious medical emergency. Seek immediate emergency medical care if you should experience a rash; hives with itching or swelling of the face, tongue or throat; and difficulty breathing.
Other symptoms may include nausea, stomach pain and vomiting or bloating. There may also be sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, as well as abnormal vaginal bleeding or a breast lump. Contact your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.

Considerations

Discuss your medical history with your doctor before taking Prempro, including any medications you may be taking. Medications such as St. John's wort, Phenobarbital and rifampin, as well as antibiotics like erythromycin, may cause drug interactions. Do not take Prempro if you have a history of abnormal vaginal bleeding, heart disease or stroke; as well as liver disease, breast or uterine cancer or blood clot in the lung or legs. Prempro should not be used to prevent heart disease or dementia because it may increase the risk of these conditions.

Warning

Do not take Prempro or Permphase if you have had a hysterectomy. Avoid smoking as smoking can increase the risk of heart attack, blood clots or stroke. Discuss with your doctor the risk of breast cancer if you are taking long-term treatment with Prempro. Your doctor will schedule regular physical examinations for you and instruct you to do monthly self examination of your breasts. Do not take Prempro if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
