How to Increase Your Milk Supply When Breastfeeding

Because breast milk is not measured out in a cup like formula, many mothers are not aware of how much milk their child is getting with each meal. This causes many mothers to grow worried that their child is undernourished. This is true for some mothers, but the good news for them is that almost all nursing women are capable of increasing their breast milk supply.

Step 1

Use both breasts during every feeding. This helps keep both mammary glands active throughout the day. You should also try to feed frequently.

Step 2

Make sure you are resting throughout the day to let your body devote its energy to milk production. If you are consistently exhausted, this can affect your milk production.

Step 3

Eat a diet high in calcium and protein. These are the building blocks of breast milk and are key to milk production.

Step 4

Massage your breasts regularly, particularly if they are tender or sore. This will not only help prevent buildup or blockage in the mammary gland, but it can also ease the pain in your breasts. Tenderness can be a deterrent to feeding for many nursing mothers.

Step 5

Take fenugreek, an herbal supplement associated with increased milk production. Take four to six capsules each day with meals.
