Fertility Pills Side Effects

Fertility pills can cause occasional side effects. While most women can use them without any issues, about 10 percent of the users will encounter side effects that may impact their decision of whether to use them or not. Most women choose to use fertility pills like Clomid because they can help them reach their goal of building a family.

Multiple Births

This is the most well-known of the side effects of using fertility pills and also is among the most common. In clinical trials of Clomid conducted by the Food and Drug Administration, 6.9 percent of women who used the drug successfully ended up giving birth to twins. About 0.9 percent had triplets, quadruplets or quintuplets. Women can minimize their chances of multiple births if they start off with a low dose of 50 mg.

Hot Flashes

Nearly 1 woman in every 10 who uses a fertility pill will have hot flashes. These can be very uncomfortable, but they are not dangerous. They can come on suddenly or they can make you gradually feel warmer over time. When hot flashes come suddenly at night they are called night sweats. Hot flashes are usually followed by feeling quite cold, and the cycle can repeat several times.

Bloating

Many women experience bloating after taking a fertility pill. This impacts about 1 in 20 (5 percent) of women. If you experience this side effect, you are advised to wear looser clothing to be a bit more comfortable. This is not a dangerous side effect, and it will pass after you stop using the fertility drug.

Other Symptoms

Some of the other symptoms reported by users include nausea, increased menstrual bleeding, breast tenderness and thick cervical mucus. That problem is devastating to someone trying to get pregnant since cervical mucus is needed to help carry sperm cells to the cervix. If the mucus thickens, the sperm cells cannot make their journey.
