Wrinkles form as skin ages because the skin becomes thinner and has less fat and collagen in its deeper layers. Exposure to the sun may also speed the formation of wrinkles. The American Academy of Dermatology also notes that some wrinkles, called sleep lines, may form or deepen at night during sleep. Sleeping position and the surface and type of pillow may help determine whether these sleep lines develop and eventually become permanent.

Pillow Types and Shapes

Sleeping on your side with your face on a pillow may produce facial lines and wrinkles. The type of pillow you choose may help prevent these wrinkles from forming at night. A big, soft pillow filled with natural feathers or down may be a good choice because it can be plumped and conformed to a shape that supports your head without pressing on your face. Some synthetic foam pillows are also available in shapes designed to fit under your head or neck and keep your face and eyes away from the pillow.

Pillow Covers

Choosing the right pillowcase for your pillow may also help prevent sleep wrinkles. A fabric that is smooth and slippery, such as satin or silk, may be a good choice. These fabrics allow your skin to slide over the pillow, keeping your skin from folding into creases while you sleep.

Pillows for Back Sleeping

Your sleeping position may also determine whether you develop facial wrinkles during sleep. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, people who sleep on their backs do not develop sleep lines and wrinkles. If you are a side sleeper, you might train yourself to sleep on your back with the help of a specialized pillow. Foam pillows are available that are shaped to support your head and neck while lying on your back. A pillow with a water-filled insert or an inflatable air bladder may also provide extra support for back sleeping.
