Shaving is an effective way to temporarily remove unwanted hair. While many people use razor blades to shave, others prefer to use an electric razor. Although deciding which type of razor is right for you is a matter of personal preference, comparing the benefits and drawbacks of each may make your decision easier.

Benefits of Electric Razors

Electric razors have many benefits over the traditional razor blade. They are generally easier to use, especially if the person is weak or cannot move very well. Since electric razors are so easy to use, you can usually shave faster with an electric razor than with a regular razor blade. Additionally, they do not require the use of water or shaving cream, which makes them convenient for quick shaving touch-ups while out or traveling. Electric razors also are less likely to cause cuts and nicks, notes the Consumer Reports website.

Benefits of Razor Blades

A standard razor blade usually touches your skin, so it is able to get closer to the bottom of the hair follicle. This typically results in a closer and more accurate shave than an electric razor shave.

Cost

Razor blades are generally cheaper than electric razors, but they get dull over time and need to be replaced regularly. Although buying an electric razor may be more expensive up front, it may save you money over time.

Considerations

Many different versions are available of both electric razors and razor blades. Some brands of traditional razors offer a double or triple blade or a moisturizing strip. Electric razors may have different available options including battery chargers, automatic shutoff, electrical cords, long-hair trimmers and different cleaning options.

Warning

Do not share razors with others, regardless of whether it is a traditional razor or an electric razor. Doing so may increase your chance of getting an infection, including hepatitis or HIV, warns the Skidmore College website.
