Jazzercise and Curves are two nationwide fitness programs that offer coordinated exercise classes as a means to help participants tone their bodies and achieve better health. While each program's goal is enhanced fitness, each utilizes different avenues of achieving this goal. Understanding the differences can help you to determine which program best fits your exercise preferences and time constraints.

Significance

Curves is an exercise program designed to incorporate strength training, cardiovascular and stretching programs, according to Diet Spotlight. The exercise program features various stations that have hydraulic equipment to minimize the impact. Jazzercise blends a variety of exercise types, including weightlifting, hip-hop, kickboxing, Pilates, yoga and cardiovascular exercise, according to Diet Spotlight. The program does not emphasize use of hand weights although some locations may offer them.

Learning Curve

Curves stations are designed to be easy to use, meaning you do not have to have a significant knowledge of strength-training equipment in order to perform, according to Diet Spotlight. A Curves personal trainer can demonstrate how to utilize each piece of equipment for optimal results. Jazzercise offers exercise DVDs that demonstrate basic moves, according to the Jazzercise website. The class is designed to support all exercise levels.

Time Frame

The Curves workout program is a 30-minute workout that is recommended to perform at least three times per week, according to Diets in Review. The Jazzercise program is a 60-minute workout that begins with a warm-up, progresses to a 30-minute cardiovascular section then a 30-minute strength-training session and finally a stretching section, according to the Jazzercise website.

Calories Burned

While the amount of calories burned can depend upon your height and weight, a woman can burn as much as 500 calories per workout, according to Diets in Review. A 150-lb. woman can expect to burn roughly 408 calories for an hour-long session of Jazzercise, according to My Fitness Pal, a fitness website that counts the number of calories burned performing various exercises.

Genders Welcome

Curves is designed specifically for women as a means to make women more comfortable when exercising. The Curves organizational culture also encourages women to support each other in their weight-loss efforts, according to Diet Spotlight. Jazzercise, however, is open to both sexes.
