Hair can become damaged from environmental damage such as sun exposure or from chemical processes such as perming and coloring. Excessive heat styling with blow dryers, straighteners or curling irons can also wreak havoc on your locks. Hair that is extremely damaged may be referred to as "fried," meaning it is frizzy and prone to breakage. Fortunately, you and your stylist can help restore a healthier appearance to your hair with proper cleansing, trimming and conditioning.

Step 1

Visit a professional stylist for a good trim. According to hair expert Mark Garrison, removing split ends and hopelessly damaged locks is the first order or business if you're suffering from fried hair.

Step 2

Use a deep conditioner to rehydrate your damaged hair. RealSimple.com recommends looking for a product containing shea butter, sweet almond protein or olive oil to restore shine to fried locks.

Step 3

Towel your hair dry or allow it to air dry before styling. Wrap freshly-washed hair in a clean, soft towel or terry-cloth turban to absorb excess water rather than blasting it out with a blow dryer. When you do blow dry or heat style, spray in a leave-in conditioner first.

Step 4

Wash your hair less often to allow its natural oils to penetrate strands. If your hair is not greasy and you don't use a lot of styling products, washing only once or twice a week will suffice. Use a conditioning shampoo containing balsam and protein to nourish your hair as you cleanse.

Step 5

Remove styling product buildup with an apple cider vinegar rinse, which conditions as it cleanses. Mix equal parts vinegar and water and pour it over your hair after shampooing. You may find that you don't need a separate conditioner after a vinegar rinse. Don't rinse with water afterward -- the smell of the vinegar will dissipate as your hair dries.
