When you first get contact lenses, it may seem difficult to remove them. Your eye doctor may want you to show him that you are able to insert and remove them without difficulty. Follow all your eye doctor's instructions carefully to avoid damaging the lenses or causing injury to your eyes. If you are unable to remove your lenses, first check to make sure you are still wearing them. After confirming that the contacts are still in, take a break and try again in a few minutes.
Step 1
Wash your hands thoroughly, using a gentle soap. This will help prevent an eye infection from occurring. Dry hands completely with a lint-free towel.
Step 2
Place a couple of rewetting drops in each eye. The extra moisture will make it easier for you to remove the contacts.
Step 3
Stand in front of the mirror and look upwards. Keep your eye focused on a particular point during the entire removal process. Pull your lower eyelid down gently with the middle finger of your dominant hand.
Step 4
Use your index finger to slide the lens to white portion of your eyes. The index finger should be rested on the lower edge of the contact lens.
Step 5
Remove the contact lens by squeezing it between your index finger and thumb. Pull the lens away from your eye and place it in a storage container filled with contact solution. Repeat the process for the other eye.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have difficulty removing the lens, it may help to slide it even further away from the cornea.
- Don't pick up the lens if you have long nails. The Obrig Contact Lenses website suggests that you instead slide the lenses out of your eye to avoid poking your eyes with your fingernails.
