Scars form after the top, thick layer of skin called the dermis, becomes damaged, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The body responds to a wound by forming new collagen to mend the damage. This production of collage results in a scar as the new skin has a different texture than existing skin tissue. Scars only form once the wound heals. To heal scars, apply one of a variety of treatments that work to minimize the appearance of scarring. Treatments may take many months to show results especially when healing older scars.
Step 1
Wait until the wound is completely healed -- no open areas, scabs or discharge -- before treating scars. Wounds may take from three weeks to several months to heal.
Step 2
Apply a layer of onion extract gel, often available as an ingredient in certain scar treatment products, to the scar daily for several months until you begin to see results.
Step 3
Apply a silicone sheet or gel to the scar daily for several months until you begin to see an improvement in your skin appearance. Silicone comes available as a gel or a medical tape, which you use to cover the scar.
Step 4
Use an alpha hydroxy acid product on the scab. Alpha hydroxy acid products come in a variety of forms including peels, cleansers and leave-on products. These products exfoliate to remove dead skin cells, often reducing the appearance of scars. Follow the directions provided with your product. Start with the mildest strength product as alpha hydroxy may cause skin irritation.
