Horseback Riding Stables in Romeo, Michigan

Many horseback riding stables provide more than boarding for horses. Horseback riding can be for recreation or sport; either way, it's an enjoyable way to stay fit. Stables in Romeo, a rural area in southeast Michigan's Macomb County, are family-oriented operations that offer training, lessons, boarding, and guided or riding experiences while following laws that are designed for your safety and the horses' well-being.

Identification

Many stables lie within 10 miles of Romeo, including Hox Acres Farms, Prainito Stables, Serenity Stables, Triple Bar Farms and Rochester Hills Stables. Most facilities offer lessons in Western- and English-style riding, dressage, trail riding, barrel racing and jumping. Indoor and outdoor riding arenas are available so riding lessons can be conducted year-round.

Rules

Many Romeo-area stables enforce a strict weight limit for the protection of the horses. Wear riding boots that will provide stability in the stirrup and are less likely to hang up in the stirrup if you fall. Bring an ASTM/SEI-approved equestrian helmet, available at area tack shops including the one owned by Rochester Hills Stables; equipment is provided by some stables.

Attractions

Many Romeo stables are open from June through August, allowing riders to learn how to care for and handle horses while developing riding skills. Facilities in some areas can be used for birthday parties or Pony Parties. Horseback riding trails are available in Romeo, including Macomb Orchard Trail that connects the villages of Romeo and Armada and the 10-mile Kensington Park Horse Trails. The flat trails wander through urban, suburban and rural areas near fields, orchards, farms and rivers.

Training

Training at Romeo stables is provided by experienced instructors who work with a variety of breeds and teach many disciplines. Instructors train students on their own horses or provide stable horses. Teachers provide group or private lessons in horsemanship, sportsmanship and showmanship for children and adults with programs from beginner to advanced levels. Beginning riders, pleasure riders and advanced show riders can all find training suited to them in the Romeo area.

Lessons

Lessons in horsemanship include grooming, tacking up, leading, bathing and clipping. Students learn about different colors and breeds of horses, health care and nutrition. Some instructors include exercises which teach balance, coordination, partnership, responsibility and mental concentration. Western or hunt seat is taught, and most Romeo stables have clinics throughout the year to teach subjects such as equine health care, grooming, show braiding or trick riding.
