Age spots and moles are usually harmless blemishes that can occur just about anywhere, but when they show up on your face, they may be unwelcome. Age spots, sometimes called liver spots, are highly pigmented, flat tan or brown marks. Moles are raised, rice-grain to pea-sized, skin-colored or darker growths. You can treat moles and age spots easily with any of a few home remedies, say skin care specialists at DocShop.com. Show the blemishes to your doctor before treating to confirm that they are harmless. Rarely, dark spots may be a sign of skin cancer.
Step 1
Mix your ingredients. Make enough for multiple applications by combining 1/4 cup of plain yogurt with 1/8 cup of apple cider vinegar. Add the freshly squeezed juice of 1/4 lemon and one tbsp. of the aloe vera gel, or sap, from a freshly cut leaf of the plant.
Step 2
Apply this mixture to the age spots or moles you want to remove. Do not apply the remedy to the normally pigmented skin surrounding the mole or spot you are treating.
Step 3
Leave the mixture in place for 10 minutes.
Step 4
Rinse the mixture off the spots or moles you are treating.
Step 5
Repeat steps 2 through 4 for a second 10-minute application.
Step 6
Rinse and dry the spot or mole and apply a moisturizing cream.
Step 7
Repeat steps 2 through 6 every morning and evening until you achieve your desired level of age spot lightening or until the mole dries up and drops off.
Tips and Warnings
- Use organic, plain yogurt and organic apple cider vinegar to be sure that you start with ingredients containing no additional chemicals which may be harmful to your skin. Refrigerate your mixture in a sealed container between applications.
- Lawrence E. Gibson, a Mayo Clinic dermatologist, warns that on rare occasions age spots and moles can be early skin cancers. Always show them to your doctor before you treat them. Researchers in the Department of Pathology at Penn State University's Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania, reported in the "Journal of Cutaneous Pathology," in 2008, that use of harsher remedies such as bloodroot can lead to permanent scarring, damage to healthy nearby skin and mis-treatment of undiagnosed tumors.
