Use a Cystic Fibrosis Diet to Control Mucus Production in Your Body

People with cystic fibrosis suffer from excess production of mucus in the body. This mucus causes problems with breathing and digestion. While there is no cure for cystic fibrosis, choosing foods that reduce the production of mucus can make you more comfortable and lower the risk of developing lung infections.

1. Eliminate all dairy foods, such as milk, cheese and ice cream. Dairy foods are the biggest offender in mucus production.

2. Restrict your consumption of foods that may trigger allergies, such as peanuts and bananas.

3. Limit your intake of saturated fats, including red meat. When eating red meat, choose the leanest cut available.

4. Wheat, barley and oat products should be eaten in moderation. Read labels before purchasing bread, crackers and cereal.

5. Garlic and onions reduce mucus production, add as much of each to your diet as possible.

6. Nuts, seeds and cold water fish have high levels of healthy oils that reduce inflammation and clear mucus from the body.

7. Gastrointestinal blockages from excessive mucus interfere with digestion. Foods such as pineapple and papaya, which contain digestive enzymes, help clear mucus from the stomach.

8. Water helps thin mucus secretions, making it easier to clear them from the body.
