Although BSN Lean Dessert is commonly referred to as a protein shake, the product contains more than just protein. BSN Lean Dessert is intended as a meal replacement supplement and the manufacturer's website notes that the shake can be used on low calorie diets as a source of high quality protein. BSN also explains that it contains ingredients intended to promote muscle gain and energy levels on low-carbohydrate diets. Before using BSN Lean Dessert protein shakes or any other supplements, you should carefully review the nutrition information and consult a medical professional.

Calories

According to BSN's official website, one scoop of BSN Lean Dessert contains 150 calories. This means that one scoop of Lean Dessert comprises 7.5 percent of the suggested daily calorie intake of 2,000 calories. Because of the low calorie count, you may be able to use Lean Dessert protein shake as a meal replacement on a weight loss program. However, you may find one shake is not filling enough because of the low calorie content -- you can add calories by mixing Lean Dessert with milk instead of water.

Fat Content

BSN's official website lists Lean Dessert protein shakes as having 3.5 g of fat per serving, with only 1 g of saturated fat per serving. The official website notes that Lean Dessert protein shakes contain medium chain triglycerides, which are a special type of saturated fat that may be beneficial. According to research published in the March 2002 issue of the "Journal of Nutrition," medium chain trigylcerides appear to increase energy expenditure or calorie burning and may improve satiety and weight management compared to other fat sources.

Carbohydrate Content

BSN's website explains that each scoop of Lean Dessert protein contains 8 g of carbohydrates. Of these carbohydrates, 1 g comes from fiber and 2 g come from sugar. Because of the low carbohydrate content, Lean Dessert protein shakes may be appropriate for low carbohydrate diets. The fiber may assist in promoting feelings of fullness -- the Mayo Clinic explains that fiber helps meals "linger longer," which results in sustained feelings of fullness. This can be helpful for weight management.

Protein Content

According to the official website for BSN, Lean Dessert protein shakes contain 21 g of protein per scoop. The website lists this as 42 percent of the daily recommended intake for protein. Unlike some other protein shakes, Lean Dessert contains protein from a number of different sources, such as whey and casein, which are dairy products, egg and soy. According to research published in the January 2010 issue of the "Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport," whey protein may help accelerate muscle recovery from exercise sessions.

Vitamin and Mineral Content

Although BSN Lean Dessert protein is primarily a protein supplement, the product does contain limited amounts of vitamins and minerals. BSN's official website lists each scoop of Lean Dessert as containing 35 percent of the daily recommended value of vitamin A, 15 percent of the daily recommended value of calcium, 2 percent of recommended iron intake and 4 percent of the recommended daily intake of magnesium. According to research found in the March 2010 issue of the journal "Biological Trace Element Research," consumption of magnesium supplements may increase your levels of testosterone, a muscle-building hormone.
