What Causes Magnesium Deficiency?

Poor Diet

Eat a well balanced and nutritious diet, following the recommended daily intake of magnesium. The U.S. recommended daily allowance guidelines quote varying amounts of magnesium for men and women, children and adults that can be found at the National Institutes of Health website (see Resources). Adult females need approximately 310 to 320 milligrams of magnesium daily, while adult males need approximately 400 to 420 milligrams.

Body Imbalance

See your doctor to determine if the cause of magnesium deficiency is the result of an imbalance of intracellular fluids in the body, most often due to imbalance of PTH or parathyroid. Overactive PTH secretions will eventually raise the level of calcium in the body, throwing off the balance of magnesium. An imbalance of magnesium in the body may be caused by chronic diarrhea, alcoholism, malnutrition as well as starvation.

Renal Insufficiency

Chronic renal insufficiency is often to blame for an individual being diagnosed with a magnesium deficiency. Any condition affecting the kidneys may result in less than optimal performance of the organs, which will affect their ability to flush out wastes, toxins and regulate body chemical balances. Drink plenty of water on a daily basis to keep kidney function operating optimally.
