Imitrex is a medicine for migraine, which functions by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain. Imitrex is available in both a tablet and nasal spray form. It is part of the class of medications called selective serotonin receptor agonists, which prevent certain signals from reaching the brain. As of 2010, Imitrex requires a prescription for use in the U.S. It is approved for over-the-counter administration in the U.K.

Sumatriptan

Sumatriptan, a white to off-white powder soluble in water and saline, is the active ingredient in Imitrex. It is especially effective in treating migraine headaches that are particularly severe and throbbing, according to PubMed, a publication of the National Institutes of Health. Patients should not take more than 200 mg of tablets or 40 mg of nasal spray in a 24-hour time period. Typically, patients take no more than two tablets per day, waiting two hours between the first and second tablet. A waiting period is also necessary between doses the nasal spray.

Inactive Ingredients in Tablets

The tablet form of Imitrex contains the following inactive ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, sodium bicarbonate, dibasic calcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate. The 100 mg tablet also has titanium dioxide, triacetin and hypromellose as inactive ingredients. The inactive ingredients function to preserve the integrity of the active ingredient, as well as ensure its proper delivery.

Inactive Ingredients in Nasal Spray

The nasal spray contains several inactive ingredients, including purified water, sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid, anhydrous dibasic sodium phosphate and monobasic potassium phosphate, according to RxList. The liquid allows the drug to be absorbed directly via the mucous membranes.
