How to Make Breast Cancer Pins

During October, officially dubbed Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the American Cancer Society encourages everyone to wear a pink breast cancer pin to signify awareness of this disease. Even major retailers such as Estee Lauder, and organizations such as the NFL have joined in the fight by pledging to raise awareness. You can help too, by making and wearing a pink breast cancer pin to show your and support for the fight against this potentially deadly disease that affects millions of lives daily.

Step 1

Purchase a 1/4-inch wide pink ribbon suitable for the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. The pink that is used is a brightly colored medium pink. Grosgrain may hold up better, and a silk or satin ribbon may fray but will give your pin an elegant look.

Step 2

Cut off a 3-inch piece of ribbon from the spool by cutting the ends on an angle. Lay the ribbon out flat and horizontal on a flat working surface.

Step 3

Place your finger on the exact center of the piece, and bring the end of the ribbon over your finger so that it crosses the flat part of the ribbon and creates a loop at the top. Fold the right side over as well, so that the end result is a loop at the top with two crossed ends underneath.

Step 4

Use a needle and thread to sew a quick stitch at the point where the ribbon crosses, to hold a neat loop in place. You can skip this step if you simply want to use a sewing pin, pressed through the place where the ribbon crosses and pinned directly on someone's clothing, but when the pin is removed, the ribbon will come undone.

Step 5

Insert a piece of solid glue stick into the back of the glue gun and plug it into allow it to heat. Test the glue gun by pulling the trigger to see if warmed glue is expelled onto a piece of scrap paper. When the glue is expelled easily, use the glue gun to add a small bead of glue and press a safety pin horizontally on the back of the ribbon, where it will be hidden where the ribbon crosses itself.

Step 6

Wear the pin on your clothing, on a handbag or purse, coat or anywhere else that you see fit. Offer pins to your friends and family to spread the awareness of breast cancer.
