According to the Micronutrient Information Center at Oregon State University, your body requires vitamins to live. Vitamins are required through your diet because your body can not produce them on its own. Oregon State University states, "an organic compound is considered a vitamin if a lack of that compound in the diet results in overt symptoms of deficiency." Along with vitamins, methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, is very beneficial to your body. MSM is commonly used to combat joint pain. In dietary supplement form, MSM may help treat certain allergies, inflammation and skin conditions.
Arthritis
The National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus website recommends using vitamin E along with regular treatments if you suffer from arthritis. Vitamin E may help reduce the pain associated with arthritis, but has not been proven to reduce inflammation. MedlinePlus also recommends a multivitamin supplement to treat arthritis. Additionally, Ray Sahelian, M.D. states that MSM has been used to treat the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. Sahelian reported that a study showed that MSM combined with glucosamine to treat symptoms of osteoarthritis was more effective than MSM used alone.
Skin
According to Ray Sahelian, M.D. there are creams made using MSM, vitamin E and other antioxidants to soften and smooth your skin. Some MSM creams are made with oil-rich liposomes to help the MSM penetrate into your skin. MedlinePlus states that vitamin E can be used to help treat skin disorders and aging skin. Vitamin E may be helpful in healing a skin sore called granuloma annulare when applied on the skin topically. Further research needs to be done on the effectiveness of vitamin E on skin disorders.
Healthy Joints
Dr. Sahelian documents that Dr. Jason Theodosakis, M.D., author of "The Arthritis Cure," recommends MSM as a natural treatment to reduce joint pain, help rebuild cartilage and enhance joint mobility and flexibility. If you are experiencing joint pain, get your vitamin D levels checked. MedlinePlus states that vitamin D deficiency may cause joint pain or muscle cramps. You can obtain vitamin D from fortified foods such as cereal and milk. Fish are a healthy source of vitamin D.
