Proper disposal of vitamins is important to prevent accidental ingestion by children and pets. It is also important to prevent the contamination of ground water and other water supplies. Vitamins should be disposed of when they are beyond their expiration dates for safety. Even vitamins can cause poisoning if swallowed in large quantities, so it is of utmost importance to dispose of them properly. Flushing vitamins and other medications down the toilet is not recommended by the FDA.
Step 1
Mix unwanted or expired vitamins in a substance that people and pets may find undesirable, such as coffee grounds or used cat litter. Alternatively, you can pour glue into the bottle and allow to harden so that the vitamins cannot be removed and consumed. Never mix vitamins with food products that may be eaten if animals get into the trash.
Step 2
Place the mixture in a sealable storage bag or other container that can be closed. You can reuse old food storage bags, boxes or double-bag in a grocery store bag and tie securely.
Step 3
Discard the container or bag in a garbage can. If possible, keep a tight lid on the trash can if stored outdoors to prevent animals from digging through the trash.
