Epsom salts, also known as magnesium sulfate, have been used as a home remedy for centuries, both for humans and for animals. Epsom salt soaks are recommended for everything from helping to heal the effects of childbirth to soothing arthritis. Epsom salt benefits include easing inflammation and drawing out toxins, according to the experts at NaturalStressCure.com. Epsom salt baths are a natural way to help speed the healing of a foot wound.

Step 1

Wash your foot with antibacterial soap to clean off any dust or dirt. Rinse the soap off carefully to avoid getting any into your actual wound.

Step 2

Fill a clean basin with warm water. Make sure that it is just a few degrees above your skin temperature, because hot water can irritate a wound.

Step 3

Add 1/4 cup of Epsom salts for every quart of water. Swish your hand around in the basin to help dissolve the Epsom salts.

Step 4

Soak your wounded foot in the warm water and Epsom salts for 10 to 20 minutes. Do this one to two times per day, unless your doctor suggests otherwise.

Step 5

Dry your foot with a clean towel. Pat and blot rather then rubbing to avoid reopening your wound. Apply a bandage or gauze and tape to protect the wound, if needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Apply a moisturizing foot cream to your foot after soaking, to counteract the drying effect of the Epsom salts.
  • Avoid using Epsom salts if you have diabetes, because the magnesium absorbed through your skin can affect insulin levels.
