Thread veins, also known as spider veins, appear on your face due to dilation of the small veins just underneath your skin. The result is a visible purple, blue bruised look that can resemble a spider's web. Although no home treatments can reduce the appearance of thread veins, many treatment options are available through your dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Thread veins are non-life-threatening and very rarely cause discomfort to the sufferer.
Step 1
Visit your dermatologist for non-invasive IPL treatments. IPL stands for Intense Pulsated Light and refers to a treatment option that uses a handheld light source to collapse thread veins through heat, states Dr. Natashia Gilani of the Cosmetic Clinic in Sussex, UK. Only one to two treatments are required for facial thread vein removal.
Step 2
Consult your dermatologist for sclerotherapy treatments. Sclerotherapy refers to a procedure involving a fine needle that is inserted into thread veins. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a solution is injected to swell thread veins and stop blood flow through them by clotting the blood.
Step 3
Discuss electrosurgery with your dermatologist or plastic surgeon, suggests the American Academy of Family Physicians. Electrosurgery is an in-office procedure that requires light radio waves to heat thread veins and force blood to clot, shrinking the veins in the process.
Step 4
Opt for laser therapy from your dermatologist. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, lasers emit strong bursts of light into the affected veins, causing them to collapse and become inactive by stopping blood from entering the veins.
