Whether your objective is additional length, added volume, enhancing your appearance or protective styling, hair weaves offer the convenience of quickly changing the appearance of your hair. Plenty of women from all races and walks of life opt for hair weaves. Hair weaves are generally applied to the hair by sewing the weave onto your own hair, but gluing the weave to your own hair with special hair weave glue is another option. When applied correctly, the result is luscious hair that looks like your very own. To preserve your hair weave, follow the proper guidelines to keep it looking as fresh as it did on day one.

Step 1

Wash your weave carefully along with washing your own hair. Be careful not to lather shampoo too vigorously through the hair, as it will tangle the weave. Be sure to use gentle products so as not to dry out your own hair or your weave. The recommendation is to wash your hair and your weave at least every seven to 14 days. Keep your weave clean to prevent it from collecting bacteria.

Step 2

Refrain from bleaching or dyeing your weave extensions. Styling chemicals will dry your weave just as they would your natural hair. An over-processed, dried weave will become very straw-like in appearance and the only way to improve the appearance of the weave would be to remove it entirely, replacing it with a new weave. Take care when blow drying and hot curling your weave as well.

Step 3

Visit your hairstylist within six to eight weeks to have your weave removed. If you plan to have new weaves put in your hair, only have them put in if your own hair under the weave is free from damage. If your hair has sustained damage during wearing the weave, you should wait at least six months to give your hair time to repair before applying another weave.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always visit a professional stylist and have your hair assessed to see if it is strong enough to maintain a weave. Continue to take care of your own hair as you normally would, paying attention to both your hair and scalp. Although synthetic weaves are cheaper than human hair weaves, they tangle and become matted more quickly than human hair weaves. Human hair weaves are recommended to ensure you get the most for your money.
  • Wearing long weaves can put pressure on your hair and scalp and lead to thinning hair and premature balding -- especially around the hairline.
