Calcium is a mineral that the body needs to maintain the strength and density of bones. Tetany

This condition occurs due to low levels of a particular form of calcium, called free ionized calcium, in the blood. Tetany is characterized by excessive nerve activity, which causes muscle pain and spasms. The individual may also experience tingling or numbness in the hands and feet.
Other Side Effects
The Office of Dietary Supplements states that long-term low levels of calcium can cause conditions such as low bone mass and also increase the risk of osteoporosis. The individual may suffer from frequent bone fractures. Abnormal heart rhythms and convulsions can also occur due to serious calcium deficiency.
