For most people, regular bathing, use of antiperspirant or deodorant and wearing appropriate clothing are all enough to keep underarm sweat from being a problem. However, for those with a condition called hyperhidrosis, excess sweating may require prescription-strength antiperspirant, oral medications or even Botox injections to alleviate the problem. Before you result to drastic measures, make sure you are following proper personal hygiene and body care. Controlling underarm sweating may simply require trying different products until you find one that works for you.
Step 1
Bathe or shower at least once a day with soap and warm water. Deodorant soaps, while they do not prevent sweating, can help eliminate armpit odor. Avoid using excessively hot water, which can cause you to sweat more after you get out of the shower.
Step 2
Apply an antiperspirant containing aluminum zirconium. Experiment with different types of antiperspirant to find the one that works best for you. According to TeensHealth.org, antiperspirants made for men and women are often formulated the same except for the fragrance. If you're a female, you may still wish to experiment with deodorants marketed for men to see if they provide added relief.
Step 3
Wear loose, breathable clothing made of natural fibers like cotton. Avoid synthetics such as polyester, which can exacerbate armpit sweating.
Step 4
Dust your underarms with baking soda or look for an antiperspirant that lists it as an ingredient. Baking soda can help absorb sweat and odor, giving your deodorant an extra boost.
Step 5
Consult a dermatologist if you continue to experience excess sweating despite trying a variety of antiperspirants. According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, Botox injections or a prescription for beta blockers can help put an end to troublesome armpit sweating.
