Chromium, a metallic mineral, is needed by the body in trace amounts. According to eMedTV, chromium picolinate is the form of chromium found in many vitamins and supplements because it is supposed to be more readily absorbed by the body. It is touted as being helpful in maintaining blood glucose levels, an aid to weight loss, depression, increasing muscle mass in bodybuilders and treating polycystic ovarian syndrome. A physician should be consulted before adding chromium picolinate as a supplement, because side effects have been reported.
Allergic Reaction
It is possible to suffer an allergic reaction to chromium picolinate. The signs of an allergic reaction include an itchy rash, hives, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing and swelling of the face and mouth. According to Drugs.com, not all uses of chromium picolinate have been approved by the FDA. It is most often sold as an herbal supplement and should not be used in place of medication to treat disease, such as diabetes, unless prescribed by a physician.
Vomiting and Diarrhea
When chromium picolinate is taken in small doses, occurrence of side effects is rare. According to eMedTV, taken in higher doses, it is possible for chromium picolinate to cause vomiting and diarrhea. There have been some instances of chromium picolinate causing blood in the stool or vomiting blood. If either occurs, consult a physician immediately.
Low Blood Sugar
One of the purported effects of chromium picolinate is to lower blood glucose levels. According to Healthline, it is possible for blood glucose levels to become too low, a condition known as hypoglycemia, while taking high doses of chromium picolinate. The symptoms of hypoglycemia include confusion, chills, rapid heartbeat, headache, muscle trembling and possibly seizure. Any sign of hypoglycemia should be reported to a physician at once. Diabetics should not take chromium picolinate unless it has been prescribed by a physician.
Behavioral Changes and Seizures
Some individuals experience behavioral changes while taking chromium picolinate as a supplement. According to Vanderbilt University, taking chromium picolinate has caused some individual to have problems thinking clearly. Others have been reported to have problems concentrating, feeling dizzy and to experience disruption of motor functions. EMedTV states there have also been reports of seizures occurring.
Anemia and Possible Cancer Link
Chromium picolinate has caused the development of anemia and thrombocytopenia in some taking it in high doses. UC Berkeley reports in their Wellness Letter that laboratory studies have shown that chromium picolinate may damage genetic material in cells, which may lead to cancer. Other studies have shown that it can produce signs of kidney damage and liver damage, including change in urination, a dark urine, and yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin. Worldwide studies have not proven that chromium picolinate is effective for weight loss, and studies performed in the United States have not shown any real benefit to taking it.
