The aloe vera plant is distinct in its look, with thick, triangular, green leaves full of a transparent gel. The gel is the heart of the plant and the reason for its popularity. The aloe plant contains many ingredients that are beneficial for external and internal ailments. It helps to rid the body of toxins, aid in digestion, provide energy and help with weight loss.

History

The aloe vera plant has been used for centuries as a medicinal plant. The Egyptians referred to it as the "plant of immortality," according to the Maharishi Ayurveda website. It was revered by the Egyptians and included among funeral gifts that were buried with the pharaohs. The aloe plant has long been recognized by ancient Indian, Chinese, Greek and Roman parties for its many healing benefits.

Identification

While the leaves contain 96 percent water, the plant also consists of antiseptic agents including lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamic acid, phenol and sulfur, according to the Healthy Life website. Other substances offered by the aloe plant are vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. The aloe vera plant has anti-inflammatory properties and analgesics as well, making this plant an exceptional, natural, healing plant.

Effects

Aloe vera juice, extract or liquid has been shown to soothe the stomach and digestive system due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Aloe vera juice is also a detoxifier and cleanser for the entire digestive system, aiding in digestion, removing toxic matter, soothing inflammation, regulating the bowel and helping with weight loss. Taking aloe vera internally helps to control blood sugar and increase energy production, according to the Maharishi Ayurveda website.

Weight Loss

According to the American Chronicle website, aloe vera juice can help with weight loss by reducing and stabilizing your body mass index. Aloe stimulates the metabolic rate in the liver, which results in burning more energy. Aloe vera also has a high content of collagen protein, which makes your body spend more energy to absorb the protein. By breaking down foods, helping the digestive system run smoothly and aiding the body to perform optimally, aloe vera can help with weight management.

Considerations

Allergies may occur with the aloe vera plant for people who have allergies to onions, garlic or tulips. The Mayo Clinic advises that the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate herbs and supplements. Side effects may be possible. Consult your doctor before using aloe vera for weight loss.
