A migraine is caused by an over-sensitized condition where the brains neurons become excited over certain stimuli. For some people, pollen, dust or allergens trigger a migraine. For others, light, television, hormones and food cause a migraine. A basilar migraine is a form of the condition that is characterized by a severe headache with aura symptoms. The headache starts at the base of the brain and spreads to the upper part of the head.
Aura
Aura is a sensation felt by migraine suffers. It is also a disturbance felt by sufferers of epilepsy before the onslaught of a seizure. The aura can last for several minutes, and it is a warning sign and symptom recognized by patients, giving them some time to take medication or deal with the impending migraine headache. An aura is characterized by strange light, sounds or smells or sensations. Most auras come with visual sensations. A person may see zigzag lines or bright lights that are not present in the room. Some patients hear the presence of voices or strange sounds. Tunnel vision is also a part of some auras. Patients can even be blinded in one eye, but for most patients, they have limited vision in one or both eyes. Patients may also experience black spots or impaired vision during an aura.
Vertigo
Vertigo is also a common symptom and sign of an oncoming basilar migraine. Vertigo is also seen with ear infections, so it creates dizziness and disorientation in patients. Patients with vertigo may feel periods of disorientation. These episodes are best treated by allowing the patients to lie down to avoid harming themselves. Vertigo can also induce slurred speech in some patients who have symptoms of a basilar migraine.
Diplopia
Diplopia is the medical term for double vision. Double vision is often a symptom of an oncoming basilar migraine as well as a symptom while the migraine affects individual. Diplopia sometimes accompanies the aura symptoms and patients may feel the need to lie down. Double vision also causes people to become disoriented. If double vision persists after the basilar migraine has passed, patients are urged to seek a medical professional for an exam.
