What Foods Help to Lower Triglyceride Levels?

Triglycerides are a form of fat that is found in the blood. They can become elevated when a person eats too many calories or foods that are high in fat and sugar. A high level of triglycerides can be potentially dangerous because it can lead to heart disease. When a person eats, excess calories turn into triglycerides, which are stored in fat cells. Triglycerides are then released for energy between meals.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are a source of fiber and other nutrients. If eaten in moderation, whole grains can also help support a healthy heart and reduce cholesterol. Individuals should avoid eating processed carbohydrates because they are high in sugar. According to the Cleveland Clinic, whole grains are able to reduce triglyceride levels dramatically, especially if eaten in small portions. Whole grains should be eaten at least two times throughout the day.

Salmon

Salmon is low in saturated fat and is a way to lower triglycerides. It also contains omega-3 fatty acid, which maintains heart health. Salmon is reasonably low in calories. Other benefits of eating salmon include muscle development, eye health and lower cholesterol. According to University of Massachusetts Medical School, salmon also has polyunsaturated fats that are good for heart health and weight loss.

Garlic

According to the American Society for Nutrition, eating raw garlic showed a reduction in triglyceride levels. Eat garlic raw to obtain the most medicinal or health benefits, but include it in your cooking if you cannot bear to eat it raw.
