Vitamin B12 plays an important role in how well the body functions. Many foods contain B12, such as liver, fortified cereals, beef, yogurt and milk. Certain groups of people, particularly those on a plant-based diet, may require vitamin B12 supplements for proper nourishment. A deficiency in this vitamin may result in weakness, fatigue, weight loss and constipation, and some people experience changes in neurological function, explains the National Institutes of Health. To supplement vitamin B12 intake, a person may need to take the vitamin sublingually, meaning under the tongue. Knowing how to take vitamin B12 in the sublingual form will aid in proper absorption.

Step 1

Determine dosage through a discussion with a health practitioner. Each person has different needs, and discussing diet and overall health will help ensure that a person receives the proper dose of sublingual B12.

Step 2

Pour one vitamin B12 tablet into the palm of the hand.

Step 3

Lift the tongue, and place the tablet under the tongue.

Step 4

Lower the tongue back into the resting position.

Step 5

Avoid moving the tablet with the tongue. The tablet will dissolve quickly. Sublingual B12 does not require water or other liquids to wash down the tablet or to help the body absorb the vitamin.

Step 6

Repeat the process, if additional tablets are necessary for proper dosage.

Tips and Warnings

  • If necessary, a person may choose to break the tablets in half. This does not change the effectiveness of the vitamin.
  • Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency require prompt medical attention.
