Health practitioners recommend fish oil capsules as a way to increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids, which may help reduce the risk of serious conditions, such as heart attacks and strokes. In some people, fish oil use may also help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels and plaque formation in the blood vessels. A person at risk for these and other conditions should discuss use and dosage recommendations with a health practitioner.

The most common way of adding fish oil to a daily supplement regimen is by taking fish oil capsules. However, some people find fish oil causes a fishy aftertaste and other symptoms such as belching, heartburn, rashes and loose stools. To reduce these side effects, a person may wish to freeze the fish oil capsules.

Step 1

Clear away a small area in the freezer. The door of the freezer or a section near the front will work best since daily use will require frequent access.

Step 2

Place the purchased bottle of fish oil in the freezer space.

Step 3

Take out the required dosage of capsules daily and replace the container after use.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid placing the container of capsules on top of other freezer items since the container could fall to the ground and spill or damage the capsules.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you develop any unusual or bothersome symptoms that accompany fish oil use.
