To enjoy the game of golf, you have to build a consistent and repeatable swing. This takes a solid address, a strong grip and an unrushed approach. A number of drills help you hit the ball cleanly and allow you to feel confident every time you approach the ball.
Penny off a Mat
High-handicap golfers and beginners may have a hard time hitting the ball correctly. This is particularly true when hitting off the fairway. Instead of hitting the ball solidly, they clip the top of the ball as they come down with the club. To hit the proper part of the ball, get a practice mat and place a penny on it. Swing your club and try to hit the penny off the mat. When you can do this consistently, you will be able to hit the ball solidly from the fairway or the short rough.
Hip Turn Drill
Golfers quickly learn that the ability to hit the ball consistently involves your full body and is not just about your arms and shoulders. To hit the ball well, you have to get your hips fully involved. To do this, take hold of the club with your left arm -- if you are a right-handed golfer -- and hit the ball with a one-armed swing. To hit the ball in this manner, you must have a full hip turn. Once you get to the top of the swing, turn your hips to and through the ball and attempt to make solid contact. It is not about swinging hard and fast. It is about making solid contact, and you can do this by getting your hips through the hitting zone.
Quarter Drill
The easy swing is the one that most golfers will find the most effective. If you swing hard, you will lack consistency. To improve in his area, place a quarter on the top of your shoe as you address the ball. Once you are ready to swing, your goal is for the quarter to remain in place once you finish your golf swing. To do this, you have to turn your hips and let the club do the work. If you are used to swinging as hard as you can and grunting on contact, you are going to have to change your approach. When you can keep the quarter on the top of your foot after your swing, you have a quiet, smooth and effective swing.
